.: Flee To Allah :.

Feeling lost.

With the recent announcement of restrictions in Malaysia, I can't help but feel overwhelmed. At the moment of writing, I am trembling, shivering. Perhaps it's my anxiety kicking in.

Rather than allowing it to overcome me, I think this would be the right time to say this would be the perfect time for all of us to band together and come out stronger than ever.

This is the time to flee to Allah.

It saddens me that mosques are closed for the next 2 weeks or so.
It saddens me that we are not able to perform umrah.
It saddens me that the numbers of those infected are increasing.
It saddens me that the medical staff are overworked.
And it saddens me that life, has become less than normal.

Am I scared?

Yes. In fact, I am struggling.

But am I optimistic we can overcome this?

Yes. Because I believe Allah is there. Allah is All Hearing. Allah is All Seeing. And Allah is the only one who can take the sickness away.

This is not the time to fear the sickness.

This is the time for us to flee to Allah.

To make doa to Him. To ask for His mercy, help and forgiveness. Ask Him for strength and patience. Ask Him for things to become better by the day. Whatever that crosses your mind, just ask it from Him.

This is the time for us to remind each other about Allah. That He is in control of everything and He is the best of planners. Pray more. Recite more Quran. Make more salawat.

This is the time for us to look at ourselves and see what we can do to make things better. Look out for our family, friends, neighbours, and community. Give donations to ease the burden of those affected by this sickness. Avoid crowded places. Stop mass gatherings. Always wash our hands with soap and water. Focus on good hygiene. Maintain your distance. And assure others that things will insha'Allah, eventually get better.

This is not the time to panic. Not the time for victim blaming. Not the time to find fault with others.

This is the time to flee to Allah.

Even if you are not a Muslim, just do your best to make the situation better. Help to reduce the spread. Get tested if you feel unwell. Stay positive.

May Allah take the sickness away and heal those who are infected by it, ameen.

.: Unfathomable betrayal :.

By the ones you trust.

Often at Islamic lectures, the speaker would remind us:

"Would you want someone to do that to your mother? Would you allow someone to do that to your sister? Would you, yourself, do that to your daughter?

If your answer is no, then do not do it to someone else. That someone could be someone's mother, sister, daughter."

For the past one week I have been reading numerous confessions on sexual accounts, or if i can put it bluntly, sexual assaults. Sexual assaults committed by none other than the people who these girls trust the most. The ones who are supposed to protect them. The ones who are given the honorable titles such as "Father", "Brother", "Uncle", "Grandfather".

Yet these honorable titles went on a path worse than beasts by choosing to submit to their devilish desires. They chose to become the predators who destroyed the lives of these innocent girls, their very own flesh and blood.

To think that this monstrosity takes place in Malaysia, and could possible take place in our very own backyard is repulsive.

To think that some of these monsters also prey on other innocent victims, without the slightest feeling of guilt or disgust is repulsive.

To think that there are many more victims who chose to remain silent, who had to relive the nightmares till the day they die, the ones who never got out alive is repulsive.

To think that Muslims, yes Muslims are committing these acts gleefully is repulsive.

The very thought of having to write this post is repulsive.

On this day, a rainy Friday, in Ramadhan and minutes before the Maghrib adhan, I pray may Allah heal the victims, may Allah protect all girls and women from these beasts, and may Allah punish these beastly perpetrators severely should they choose to not repent and fear Allah, Allahumma ameen, thumma ameen.

Beasts living among us.

.: Marital bliss :.

我们结婚了!

Entering the second week of Ramadhan. Time sure flies doesn't it? Recently one of my friends asked how has Ramadhan been like as a newly married couple. The introvert in me had to keep it succinct with a tinge of sweetness thus I came back with, "All well, Alhamdulillah."

And I am still far from divulging further privy details in the blog either.

One thing that I would like to share though is my keenness to explore, learn and understand the intricacies of my husband's side in observing Ramadhan. Not exactly by the family, more of his entire race. I work macro down to micro level, and I like to cover as many aspects as possible. So I re-activated my Weibo account and began scouring for Chinese Muslim profiles. One can say I became like some sort of a stalker, full of glee at the first slight indication that a profile could possibly belong to a Chinese Muslim.

Alhamdulillah, eventually this obsession paid off. Found close to 50 profiles, where like most Muslim profiles, shared their daily Ramadhan rituals, supplications and reminders. Quite a number are into fashion so I did get a fair share of the hijab tutorials. Not too different from ours here in Malaysia. Even followed an account that does Islamic lectures in Chinese. Out of the 50, I connected with about 5 of them. At this age, introversion is fully embedded in me.

Will this continue after Ramadhan? Probably. It fascinates me how diverse our religion is. We may be of a different race, speak a different language, look differently, have different preferences, yet we are very much alike. The more we seek each other out, the more we realise we are not that different after all. The religion, in some ways, unites us.

How I would like to end this is break out from your nutshell, breakaway from your comfort zone and go ahead to venture into the unknown. Get to know other people. People from another race, another religion, another country. People with varied backgrounds and lifestyles. Open your mind and heart to just be aware that there are other people out there. After all, we are created differently so we can learn from each other.

Limitless learning.

Polly want a cracker?

Breadcrumbs. There were breadcrumbs on the sidewalk. Before long, pigeons began to flock the area, scrambling for crumbs.

A little girl peeked from behind a wall. She smiled. She had been feeding the pigeons with her breadcrumbs. She knew there were pigeons around. She felt generous and wanted to share. She believed that by doing so, she could probably score extra brownie points with God.

She had been doing it for quite a while until another girl comes by. The girl too had the same intention. She wanted to feed the pigeons too. Together, they fed the pigeons. Their intentions were pure. They only wanted to share the little that they have.

Along comes another girl. She had seen the pigeons. Unlike the two girls, this girl felt she had something far better to offer. She had crackers. She scattered some at the sidewalk and felt contented that the pigeons had something better as a meal.

And the pigeons ate. The pigeons ate the crackers and the breadcrumbs. The pigeons did not differentiate the people who fed them and the food that they were given.

In real life, the pigeons represent less privileged people, whereas the girls represent our society. Quite a number of places and people run soup kitchens. These people do it out of their consideration and goodwill towards others. It has never been about who could offer better or more food. In fact, these people try to work together. Because the goal is to provide food to the less privileged.

The place where we live in would be a far better place if individuals could also have the same mentality when it comes to other areas besides charity. Whenever possible, be a catalyst for change to happen. Inspire others to pool resources and work together. But above all, remain focused on achieving the goal.

After all, life has never been about getting recognition from others. What comes from the heart, goes straight to the heart. So give from your heart. Be sincere. Be genuine. Be real.

And life will return the favour back to you.

.: Chasing Jannah :.

Ahlan ya Ramadhan.

One of the deeds often connected with the blessed month of Ramadhan is giving sadaqah or donations. Donations are often given in various forms, be it monetary, resources, time or even as simple as a smile.

For those who would like to perform this good deed, you could do it as an individual or better still, gather your loved ones and do it as a collective effort.

Whether you are a Muslim or a non-Muslim, and whether it is Ramadhan or any other months, I wholeheartedly believe we can all play a role in offering assistance to others. By helping others, we are developing ourselves to become better people.

Places for you to channel your donations, insha’Allah:

If you may, please take this moment to utter a prayer for those who lost their lives during the recent earthquake in Sabah. Offer your prayers too to those who are undergoing difficulties in their lives.

May Allah SWT reward you for the good that you do and may He keep you under His guidance at all times, Allahumma ameen.

.: Marriage Conference P1 :.

‘Tis the season to get married.

In Facebook, I clicked on the “Join” button to indicate that I will be attending the Marriage Conference

I don’t have a particular reason for attending. I just thought it would be fun to see how things will turn out. Besides, quite a number of my friends will be there as well so I figured I could use the time to catch-up with them. Making the decision to attend, in my humble opinion, was like to kill several birds with one stone.

My good friend upon seeing the Facebook update responded by saying,

 “Congratulations Hajar!”

Makes me feel as though going to the Marriage Conference is akin to a huge leap for mankind.

On another note, a good friend of mine is getting married! Barakallahu lakuma, wa baraka 'alaikuma, wa jama'a bainakuma fi khair! May Allah swt bless them with much love and happiness all the way to jannah, Allahumma ameen.

努力不放弃。

It was one of those days. A friend asked a favour from me to interview some parents.

Friend :: Some of them can only speak Chinese. That's where you come in. :DDD

I didn't know what to expect. I was speaking to the teachers in English when the parents came in.

Parent :: Sorry ya. I don't speak good English. At home we speak Cantonese. My daughter teach me English. She oso teach her grandfather. Always sing one~

The parents put in so much effort to speak in English that I didn't have the heart to tell them that we can conduct the interview in Chinese. Plus it was heartwarming to see the interactions between the children and their parents.

Language isn't always a barrier.

真希望真主保佑马来西亚.

A great calamity has befallen Malaysia, the country that I call home for now. More than 100,000 people in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Perak are gravely affected by massive floods and it is devastating to see the numbers and casualties increasing by the day. Efforts to provide relief are underway, yet one can't help but feel completely helpless.

For those who would like to channel funds, aids or any form of assistance, this Facebook page has compiled a comprehensive list of organisations to donate to: Blessed Gatherings KL

Let us set aside our differences and focus on being more compassionate and sympathetic towards the victims. Pray for their safety and may Allah S.W.T alleviate their sufferings, Allahumma ameen thumma ameen.

Be concerned. Be human.

.: 感恩是幸福的源 :.

Gratitude is the source of happiness.

While I was in the LRT, I found myself with this question in mind;

Just what are people grateful for?

We often hear people saying they are grateful for their family, their friends, their career, education, wealth, and health, but I was not looking for the standard definition. More of, I was heading for the less than ordinary outlook of what it means to be grateful.

And I found myself at Petaling Street.

Walking along the dark alleys of Petaling Street, I came to the realisation that gratefulness can also be found in observing others, and I honestly feel blessed to come across the homeless.

Through them, I discovered that gratitude doesn't necessarily have to come from something, or someone we are familiar with.

Because honestly, it is easier to be grateful for something that we work for. It is fairly easier as well to be grateful for the people we have around us, particularly the ones who have been supporting us.

But for these people, they have no one, and they have nothing much.

Or so I thought.

Despite their difficulties, the homeless are still able to impart lessons to appreciate the little that they have, the people they have taken for granted, and the random people that appear in their lives.

Every single moment is cherished, and for them, they are never alone. It would not be far fetched for me to say that in reality, I believe they have so much more to offer.

Because to them, everything, and everyone, matters.

Emancipation.

On some days, it feels as though the lyricist is writing a piece of someone's story, and in listening to the lyrics, it unleashes a gush of emotions of a certain memory - a memory that was long forgotten, buried discretely under the depths of time.

Blurring off the image, often times, seems like an arduous task. Thus one wallows in the moment, lost in his or her thoughts, reminiscing. As the song comes to an end, the emotions and the memory that came with it, are buried once more.

Unearthing possibilities.

Changi Airport.

Cousin 1 :: Look at that grandpa over there. He shouldn't be working at his age!
Cousin 2 :: He has to. Singapore has high living standards.

On one of my solitary walks, I observed a grandpa hastily picking up the rubbish us civilised people left behind. He had a hunched back, and could possibly be in his late 60s. As I observed him, I noticed the onlookers, comprising bustling youths, taking no notice of him. The ones, who did, chuckled as though he was their limelight of the day.

Morning came and I went on another solitary walk. I was trying to rid the image out of my head, when in less than a jiffy; I stumbled upon an elderly man, with a pile of cardboard boxes. He stood at the corner of the road, scrambling for some balance as he stacked one cardboard after the other. And I stood there, at the side of the curb, utterly helpless.

In all honesty, these impromptu trips to Singapore, have taken a toil to say the least. Of all things that could remotely be possible to bring the spirits down, incidents such as these equate to those watershed moments.

Outside of this ark, all is deluge

.: Sunday tidbit :.

As though time stood still.

Shifted to the new environment. Things started off looking rather hazy for me, and somewhere in between, I begin to develop insecurities. I wasn't sure where I was heading to, and I wasn't sure what to anticipate. As though all I had was a rickety raft to hold on to as I allow myself to be drifted away into this peculiar and uncharted territory.

Soon enough it was time for lunch. Took a walk along the pavements, and snatched one or two glances at a couple of shops. Walked a little further and found myself in an old neighbourhood. There were chickens running around and I saw an elderly Chinese lady wearing the traditional Chinese attire making her way to the market; an uncommon sight for me. From a distance. a cobbler sat at the sidewalk. Beads of sweat streamed down his face as he skillfully hammered the soles. And just like that I found myself surrounded by shops with old signboards. Had I somehow rather transported myself into a bygone era?

Dramas aside, I walked back to where I came from. There I stood, at the crossroads between the bygone past and the subsequent future. Lost in thought until a boy with his brother rode a bicycle past me, smiling gleefully as they disappeared into the throngs of people. I suppose, life at the new place, will not be that boresome afterall.

Ramadan mubarak! :)

The food cart.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.

Plato

Whenever she sees me loitering around the vicinity, she will call out to me to come over. Once she is done with attending to her customers, she will then kindly ask me about my well being. Sometimes she gives me food, sometimes she gives me money. She never lets me leave with nothing in hand.

All along I thought that I have nowhere to go to, that I have no one, that I have nothing and I am nothing. Her gesture made me feel that I can do something, that I should do something, and that I can be something.

.: 想要的回忆 :.

Desired memories.

Our room faced
the lake at Taylor's University College Lakeside campus in Petaling Jaya. There was just enough space for me to sit at the window of our room at Ruemz hotel, the perfect place for me to browse through my AlMaghrib class notes. Once in a while I will glance over at the sisters and join in the conversations, speaking as though we have known each other for ages when in actual fact, it was just the week before we became acquainted to one another.

It was that very week, in the afternoon, when one of the sisters came up to me and said;

I know we are supposed to do this solely for the sake of Allah, for the sake of our Lord, but I cannot help but feel that after we try so hard to assist the people as much as we can, we just end up feeling unappreciated. How do I overcome this feeling?

I smiled at her and responded with;

What we have to go through, is nothing as compared to what the Prophet had to go through. How did the Prophet feel when he tried so hard to give them the truth, yet they chose to hurt him instead? What did he do to overcome that? Remember our purpose. We are here to sincerely assist people, and by doing so, we hope to have our deeds recognised and accepted by Allah, Allah alone and not by someone else. Keep that in mind. :)

Soon after, I gave her a hug and we resumed our designated tasks. Later in the evening, the same sister came up to me saying she needed to tell me something. She hesitated for a while, tried to utter a few words, stuttered something somewhere in the middle, and I was still there, waiting anxiously for her to get it off her system. When it eventually came out, it just made the wait all the more worthwhile.

I love you for the sake of Allah sis. I really really do. May Allah reward you for helping me out earlier. :)

Despite being tremendously tired and weary after a long day at Taylor's, her words, and her hug gave me the last bit of strength to say;

I love you for the sake of Allah too sis. If you ever catch me having one of those low moments, please remind me too. :)

Linked worlds.

"Shout to the world! Because we care for the children!"

The words of a friend

With the sun shinning high above our heads, we braced ourselves and hiked through what seemed like a never-ending timeless trail to the unknown. Completely surrounded by the wilderness; the majestic trees, flowing rivers and challenging path didn't deter us from going further into the forest. We were there on a quest, and we shall carry out that quest even if it means letting every single bloodsucker suck out every single drop of blood we had in us.

Little girl :: I don't want to learn English. It is difficult.

Me :: How about we do some simple word plays? I'll tell you a funny story based on this picture but I will mix the story with some English words. After I'm done, I will ask the items in English and you have to point it to me. After that, I will start asking the items in Malay and you have to point it to me and say it in English. I think that's fairly easy. :)

Several moments later.

Little girl :: That was fun! Can we do that with other pictures too? Tell me another story!

Some people have a wonderful capacity to appreciate again and again, freshly and naively, the basic goods of life, with awe, pleasure, wonder, and even ecstasy.

Abraham H. Maslow

The journey may had been wearisome to some of us city folks. However, the extensive amount of warmth, laughter and smiles from these little angels certainly made it worth all the while. Wherein within this little settlement which is appropriately tucked away from the hustles and bustles that city life has to offer, we made time and shared with them the basics of secular knowledge.

In return, these little angels with their inborn sense of wonder and pure innocence showed us the path to rediscover what it means to live a life filled with simplicity, meaning and gratitude to the brim. The very essence which enabled us to rejuvenate our entire lifeless souls to once again experience life in utter bliss, joy, excitement and mystery in a myriad of unimaginable ways.

Advocating literacy.

Our Little Book Keepers

Initiated by Raleigh KL, the prime objectives for this project is to promote literacy among the children from the rural villages in Sabah as well as to create public awareness pertaining to their welfare.

Therefore, Raleigh KL aim to gather and send more than 211 books to children aged between 4 to 12 years old by 1st October 2011. The books; in English or Malay can be hand-me-downs
(good condition) or new ones and the content should not consist of anything negative or relating to religion, death, illness, politics, divorce etc.

。。。 ~ 。。。

Reading I supposed was one of the first forms of unrestricted indulgence I ever had, whereby my childhood centered around the works of Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, R.L. Stine, The Bookworm Club, fables and yes, those happily ever after fairy tales. It didn't take long for me to develop the excessive compulsive behavior of collecting every single book in the series or by the author and stashing it at every possible nook and cranny at home. Fortunately for me, I have an awesome family and they didn't mind one bit.

However, sometimes my mum and aunt will harp on me because my books are often scattered everywhere. I have it on my bed, in my bag, on my computer table, in the car, on my printer, in the living room, even on the bedroom floor! So every week I have to allocate some time just to sort and place them back on the shelves, in the drawers or if I can't find space, I'll seal them in boxes and store it in the storeroom. Just one of the nasty habits I have yet to overcome. Not that I'm planning to overcome it any sooner. :)

Hence, the moment I heard about this project, I went ballistic. For someone who has her nose stuck in books throughout most of her lifetime, I hope the children will enjoy the books as much as I did as I have the opinion that besides promoting literacy and instilling the love of reading, what we are really doing is to let them know that there are people out there who truly cares for them and their well-being.

For now the only gift we can offer is the gift of reading, but this gift comes with knowledge and may that knowledge open the paths for them to have a better future, insha'Allah. [God willing]

Weightless thoughts.

Last Saturday, a group of friends and I went to Ipoh to attend a gathering. It was my first time attending and I didn't know what to expect. Even while I was in the car sandwiched in between 2 breathtakingly beautiful ladies, I was still in a clueless state. It was only when everybody had broken the ice that I managed to grasp the gist of our gathering.

Usually I am very cautious and selective when participating in any gatherings with an Islamic theme. But I still took my chances on this one. :)

Alhamdulillah the gathering went quite well. As a born muslimah who had once upon a time taken Islam for granted, I guess I can never get tired of listening to revert stories of any kind. I'm sure everybody has a revert story of their own, and every story has a significant impact and wisdom. I won't blog much as many others have blogged about it.

Please click on the links:

All I have to say is we may have had our differences, however through a healthy change of views I believe one can learn to reflect and better oneself. A short reminder when the going gets tough:

Regardless of the situation, keep an open mind. Couple that with sincere, relentless efforts. Also pray and beseech to our Lord for his guidance, strength and protection. Constantly remember He is with us at all times and that He shall provide what He decides is best for us based on His terms. Lastly, believe that things shall eventually fall into place. Insha'Allah. :)

On that day every individual may come as strangers, but at the end of the day we went back as brothers and sisters.

Alhamdulillah. :)

Brother Ikhwan wrote a blog entry relating his experience at PERKIM HQ; [A Trip to PERKIM HQ], where he also posted some images of the Islamic reading materials he obtained while he was there.

As I have a small collection of my own written in Chinese, I felt called upon to share it here particularly to my Chinese Muslim friends since I've heard it's not easy for them to get it. Some of these books were published in Malaysia while others were brought over from China, Singapore and Turkey.

If anyone wants to read any of this, I'm not too sure whether I can purchase/source the overseas publications since it was gifted to me some time ago. However, I am willing to lend, photocopy or scan the contents for you. Should you require additional reading materials, I can try asking friends in PERKIM and MACMA.

.: Simple life :.

Rumah terbuka
.

The happiness of one's own heart alone cannot satisfy the soul; one must try to include, as necessary to one's own happiness, the happiness of others.

Malaysians are very synonymous with rumah terbuka *open houses*, and although Eid is about a week away I'm already receiving invitations. Apparently I have lost some weight so friends are taking turns to stuff me; not that I'm complaining. God willing I will organize one again this year, albeit I hope to do a simpler kind.

Not too long ago I became friends with a sister who leads a very simple life with her husband and children. Our correspondences made me all the more thankful with what I have as my seemingly 'simple' life pretty much pales in comparison to theirs. Coming from humble backgrounds, I
wish to learn the simple life from her too, and in due course share our ups and downs with each other. We almost went our separate ways due to some internal concerns but praise the Lord our bonds are stronger than ever now. Sincerity, patience and perseverance along with sisterly love and the blessings from our Lord made it possible, Alhamdulillah.

PS :: To my dear readers, brothers and sisters who had given me the love and support during these past few days, I thank you so much. Only God can repay your kindness.

Ramadhan is coming to an end.
