First advice from my former superior :: "When you walk, look at everyone. Don't keep your head low. After that, spread your smile. It helps break the ice."
Last advice from my mentor :: "Keep the smile."
So I must have smiled a lot, right? *lol*
I still walk with my head low. Am just used to it. A game that I used to play with my cousins during our childhood is that whenever we got stuck in traffic, we'll smile wider than a Cheshire cat's grin, while concurrently waving frantically to the people in the next car to see their reaction. The thrill is when we try to do so to someone that looks like the whole world crashed down on him. I guess because we were kids, we often got away with it.
Someone said that when I'm down in the dumps, I'll lug everyone to ride the boat of gloom and sail through the murky miserable waters with me. Truth is, to maintain cheerfulness in a distressing situation is no small feat. Occasionally, I'll casually start throwing smiles to strangers. Doing so, do invite stares from people. At most, they'll give me a puzzled look, wondering what I'm up to. Whatever the reaction is, it sure help bring out a little spark of ecstasy in me. Even if the upshot is a scowl. *the idea of getting a glare or a good telling off attests that for a moment, I had crossed the persons' mind ... that alone is joy enough for me. weird, huh?*
The adage that it takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, used to work until I started to question on the validity. At least, a smile is a form of sadaqah, is it not? Why are many of us holding back then? Giving it away does not mean we are losing it. Instead, it brings forth a sense of contentment to oneself for sharing one's happiness. With earnest sincerity, the smiles we have on our faces will be returned with the smiles from others. Ultimately, not only will it do good for others, in due course it will bring about a similar effect on us.
Therefore, bring some sunshine into someone's day, add a little twinkle in your eyes, spread the warmth and ...
Smile. :)
